What IS Coaching?

To explain what coaching is, it may be best to first understand what it is not.

Coaching can often blur the lines and get confused with things like consulting, mentorship, or therapy.

And although those share some similarities and are all uniquely valuable resources for seeking advice or receiving assistance, they’re still distinctly different and serve unique purposes.

Consultants and mentors generally provide advice or guidance based on the specific knowledge that they have within a given industry or area of expertise. They can provide help with overcoming specific hurdles or tasks that are centered around external problems, but likely won’t resolve more internalized issues with things such as assumptions, interpretations, or limiting beliefs that may be holding you back and keeping you from doing things you know you’re capable of doing.

Similarly, a therapist may focus on problems that are more rooted in the past, working primarily to uncover why things might have happened. Again, although extremely valuable for getting at the root cause of deeply seeded or traumatic issues, this still differs from professional coaching in the way that coaching is more focused on tackling issues that you’re facing in the present and then determining how you’d like to handle or change things going forward.

So, at it’s core, true coaching is more than just helping you set goals, get tasks done, or talk about problems… it’s designed to give you the personal insight, power, and ability to create a life of your own choosing.

And as your coach, my role and responsibility is to challenge you to look at things differently, help you to discover what you truly want in life, support you with designing step-by-step action plans for achieving your goals, and then hold you accountable for taking action on the things you say you’re going to do.

All of which is done through personalized, one-on-one coaching sessions that are specifically designed to help you uncover the core of what makes you who you are, while also providing guidance, support, and actionable strategies for you to enhance your life, career, business, personal/professional relationships, and more.
