What Exactly IS Coaching?
In order to best explain what coaching is, I believe it’s important to first understand what it is not.
Coaching is not a form of consulting, mentorship, or therapy. Those are all uniquely valuable resources and methods for seeking advice or receiving assistance in certain situations or areas of life, but they are distinctly different from actual coaching.
You see, consultants and mentors are generally hired or brought on to provide advice based on their knowledge of what to do and how to do it within a specific industry or area of expertise, but, in most cases, don’t hold you accountable for getting things done or actually implementing what they’ve suggested. And therapists tend to focus on problems that are deeply rooted in the past and largely work to uncover why things might have happened.
However, true coaching is a solution-focused, action-oriented partnership that helps people create and experience a life of their choosing.
It focuses primarily on things happening in the present, with an ultimate goal and intention of helping you better understand how you’re currently showing up in the world around you, so that you can better dictate how you show up in the future.
The methodology behind coaching is designed to help you identify your Core Values, challenge your belief systems, evaluate what is or isn’t serving you, and learn why you’re doing (or maybe not doing) certain things.
It will challenge you to be intentional about your life and to take the time to focus on what you really want, and helps you discover and break through what is holding you back from achieving success.
As a coach, I’ll challenge you to look at things differently, help you discover what you truly want in life, support you with designing step-by-step action plans for achieving your goals, and then hold you accountable for taking action.
This is done through a series of one-on-one coaching sessions specifically designed to help you uncover the core of what makes you who you are, while providing guidance, support, and actionable strategies for you to enhance your life, career, business, personal/professional relationships, etc. as you see fit.
